APC led at schools. LP led at halls. PDP led at gates.
This briefing reads the polling-unit name in the 2023 presidential IReV record, groups each unit by the type of place named there, then adds up votes for APC, LP, PDP and NNPP. Ordinary schools are one group. Halls, palaces and courts are one group. Gates and kofar are reported with those main types. Islamiyya and tsangaya schools are kept separate.

Named places
Who led at each type of polling place
Vote shares use APC, LP, PDP and NNPP only. Turnout is accredited voters divided by registered voters. A name that mentions a place is treated as that place.

School combines primary, secondary and unspecified schools. Hall / palace / court combines town halls, civic and community halls, palaces and court houses. Gate / kofar is a named gate, often the entrance to a palace, ward or compound; those names cluster in the North. 1,414 other named buildings (motor parks, secretariats, hotels, libraries) are not in this table. 61,361 names had no facility word and are left unclassified.
Other named sites
Open spaces and streets still show a different map
Many units are named for an open space, a street or a compound rather than a school, hall or gate.
| Place | Polling units | Leader | APC | LP | PDP | NNPP | Turnout |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Open space / square | 17,503 | APC, 41% | 0.67m | 0.48m | 0.41m | 75k | 28% |
| Street / junction / road | 8,761 | LP, 43% | 0.35m | 0.39m | 0.14m | 25k | 23% |
| Compound / house / quarters | 4,757 | APC, 44% | 0.25m | 68k | 0.20m | 48k | 28% |
| Village / neighbourhood name | 3,876 | APC, 42% | 0.21m | 77k | 0.16m | 48k | 30% |
These leftover names do not point to a school, hall, clinic, market or gate. They remain a separate reading of the register.
Method
How each polling unit was classified
The classification is added on top of the 2023 presidential IReV polling-unit file. Vote totals on those units are not changed.
Start from the published unit
The dataset has one row for each of 176,409 polling units, with the polling-unit name and votes for APC, LP, PDP and NNPP.
Read the name as a description of the place
INEC titles already encode the venue: LGEA primary school, town hall, PHC, central mosque, kofar sarki. There is no separate official field for building type.
Match facility words in a fixed order
English and Hausa words are tested in one sequence. The first match wins, so “Primary Health Centre” is health and “Baptist Primary School” is a school. Phrases after near, opposite, beside or behind are stripped so a nearby landmark is less likely to become the class.
Roll the fine matches into reporting labels
Primary, secondary and unspecified schools become School. Town halls, civic and community halls, palaces and courts become Hall / palace / court. Gate and kofar stay one label. Campuses stay out of School. Islamiyya and tsangaya stay out of School.
Keep Qur’anic schools as their own label
Islamiyya and tsangaya are Islamic / Qur’anic schools, mostly in the North. Mixing them with LGEA primary schools would hide a different electorate.
Leave names without a facility word unclassified
Personal, street and settlement labels with no building noun are not guessed into a type. Those 61,361 units are excluded from the named-building table rather than forced into a school, hall or market.
| Label used here | What the name matched |
|---|---|
| School | Primary, secondary, LGEA, GDSS, unspecified school / sch |
| Hall / palace / court | Town hall, civic or community hall, palace, fada, court |
| Gate / kofar | Gate, kofar |
| Hospital / health centre | Hospital, PHC, clinic, dispensary, maternity, asibiti |
| Market | Market, kasuwa |
| Stadium / playground | Playground, stadium |
| Church | Church, chapel, named denominations |
| Islamiyya / tsangaya | Islamiyya, tsangaya |
| Police / barracks | Police station, barracks |
| Mosque | Mosque, masjid, masalaci |
| University / polytechnic / college | University, polytechnic, college of education or agriculture |
Party totals
For each label, party votes are the sum of APC, LP, PDP and NNPP on the units in that group. The leader is the party with the largest share of that four-party sum.
Accredited / registered
Turnout is the sum of accredited voters divided by the sum of registered voters in the same group. Units without those fields are omitted from the rate, not filled in.
How Mundx reads IReV result forms is documented on Method. Companion briefings: how concentrated each candidate’s vote was, city, town and village votes, one-party polling units, and 2023 governorship versus presidential votes. Only INEC declares official results.
